What can I do while I am waiting?

  • NOTIFY LHA IF YOU MOVE OR YOUR NAME CHANGES. Appointment letters are mailed. If your letter comes back because we don’t have the right address or name, you are taken off the waiting list.
  • NOTIFY LHA IF YOUR FAMILY SIZE CHANGES OR YOUR DISABILITY STATUS CHANGES. You may be eligible for a preference.
  • GET SOCIAL SECURITY CARDS AND BIRTH CERTIFICATES FOR EVERYONE IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD. This can take time and can cost money. When you get an appointment, you will need to have these things in order to be eligible for a voucher.
  • KEEP BEING A GOOD TENANT. Criminal history checks are run by the Lincoln Housing Authority (LHA) for every household member prior to issuing a voucher. Getting a voucher doesn’t mean you will find someone who will automatically rent to you. Private landlords may review your previous rental, credit, and criminal history.
  • IF YOU OWE MONEY TO A PUBLIC HOUSING AUTHORITY, PAY IT OFF. You may come to the top of the LHA voucher list but if you owe any public housing authority money, you can’t get a voucher.
  • GET IN THE HABIT OF CHECKING YOUR MAIL. LHA will communicate with you through the mail using the most current address you give us.

More information about waiting lists can be found in the Section 8 Administrative Plan or you can call LHA at 402-434-5500.
