Text Box: The Lincoln Housing Authority does not provide emergency housing. Emergency housing is available through the People’s City Mission and Friendship Home. The People’s City Mission provides emergency shelter for both homeless families and individuals. Friendship Home provides emergency shelter to women and children who are homeless because of domestic violence or sexual assault.

The Lincoln Housing Authority gives preference on the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list to homeless families, in addition to victims of domestic violence and families participating in an approved self-sufficiency program. The Housing Authority also provides housing units and/or financial support to a number of organizations or groups who address the needs of the homeless as discussed below.
 
Homeless Committee for Housing Choice "Homeless" Voucher Program
Representatives of various local human services agencies make up the Homeless Committee. The Committee awards housing assistance to homeless families or individuals who are willing to participate in case management for at least one year and address issues that led to homelessness. LHA reserves sixty-five Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers for the committee’s use. The committee, which meets weekly to coordinate and manage the program, pre-screens prospective voucher recipients, votes on applications, and provides needed case management. Friendship Home of Lincoln
Friendship Home of Lincoln provides services to women and children who are homeless because of domestic violence or sexual assault. Friendship Home provides both emergency shelter and with LHA’s assistance, transitional housing for women and children leaving the emergency shelter. LHA provides Friendship Home six housing units, maintenance and repair of the units and operational financial support. For more information, contact Friendship Home at (402)475-7273.
 
Fresh Start
Fresh Start provides homeless women, unaccompanied by children, with shelter, food, and preparation for independent living. Each Fresh Start program participant follows an individualized plan developed to address her specific needs and issues. Participants are encouraged to develop concrete goals, attain employment and self-sufficiency, and to develop relationships with peer mentors. The Fresh Start program provides case management, record keeping, educational activities, therapeutic and medical services, and coordination with other human services agencies. Catholic Social Services’ Transitions Project for Homeless Families
The Transitions Project serves homeless families with children. Families receive housing, mental health counseling, employment and educational assistance, transportation, housekeeping and budgeting skill-building, child care, and community resource referral. LHA rents housing units to Catholic Social Services for use in the program and provides technical support. For more information contact the Transitions Project, (402)474-1600.
 
Security Deposit Assistance Program for Homeless Families
With funds provided under an agreement with the City of Lincoln Urban Development
